OUR COLLECTION — AFRICA — KENYA 102. GREY KISII STONE HOLY FAMILY
This Nativity of the Holy Family is hand-carved from grey kisii stone near the small village of Tabaka in the Kisii District of western Kenya. Kisii craftsmen have carved soapstone for many years. The men in the village do the carving and the women do the polishing. The stone varies in color from rose to white with many variations between. These amazing sculptures are each handcrafted without the use of commercial machinery. This industry supports many people in that area. Joseph stands 6 inches tall by 4 inches wide.
The bead and wire Baobab tree is made in South Africa for a nonprofit organization that seeks to help reverse the legacy of apartheid in South Africa. A dynamic and original African art form, wire art is thought to have originated from young herdboys of Maputoland and Zululand in the northeast corner of South Africa, who fashioned their own toys from discarded wire and tin cans. Today, crafters from the townships create many functional as well as ornamental decorative wire items, handmade from recycled materials. The Baobab tree measures 10 inches tall.
